Nestled in the heart of Milwaukee, the Mitchell Domes are a hidden oasis that offer a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Consisting of three glass domes filled with exotic plants from around the world, the Mitchell Domes offer a unique and educational experience for visitors of all ages.
The Mitchell Domes were built in the early 1900s by horticulturist John Mitchell as a way to showcase his plant collection. The domes were originally intended to be temporary structures, but due to their popularity, they were eventually made permanent.
In 1931, the Domes were renovated and expanded. The new additions included an art deco entrance and a Palm House that featured exotic plants from Africa and Asia. In 1975, the Domes underwent another round of renovations, this time to restore them to their original 1896 glory. Today, the Mitchell Domes are owned and operated by the Milwaukee County Parks Department and feature three distinct gardens: The Desert Dome, The Tropical Dome, and The Show Dome.
When you visit the Domes, you'll be able to see a wide variety of plants from all over the world. The Desert Dome is home to cacti and other desert plants, while the Tropical Dome features jungle plants from Africa, Asia, and South America. The Show Dome is where you'll find seasonal flower shows, and it's also where you can attend educational workshops and classes. No matter what time of year you visit, there's always something new to see at the Milwaukee Mitchell Domes. Currently you can see the Fall Floral Show - Once Upon a Mum which will be open until November 6, 2022. The Holiday Floral Show runs from November 19 - January 3, 2023.
If you're looking for an educational and fun activity to do while in Milwaukee, be sure to visit the Mitchell Domes. The Domes are open year-round and offer a variety of educational programs for children and adults. Visitors can take self-guided tours or participate in guided tours led by knowledgeable staff members. The Domes are also available for rental for private events such as weddings and corporate functions.
